We frequently get asked what the correct surface preparation is required for carbon fiber application. Since the bond between externally bonded FRP reinforcement and the concrete substrate is highly dependent on the quality of the surface preparation. Accordingly, accurate measurement of surface roughness results in more reliable and predictable bond behavior.
The American Concrete Institute created a guideline for the correct concrete surface profile (CSP) for Carbon Fiber Installation. The Guide for the Design and Construction of Externally Bonded FRP Systems for Strengthening Concrete Structures recommends a CSP 3 for these applications.
