Scope: Parking garage structural repairs and reinforcement

The Solution: FRP++ for Parking Garage Structural Repair – Strength, Protection & Longevity

The Challenge: A Deteriorating Parking Garage

A multi-level parking garage serving a high-traffic residential/commercial property showed extensive concrete deterioration, shear cracks, and steel corrosion. Structural deficiencies in beams, columns, and slab connections posed serious safety concerns. The property owner needed a non-invasive, long-lasting repair solution to restore structural integrity without major disruption to operations.

Five people stand on cracked pavement, looking at a dilapidated parking garage. The group of people are comprised of a structural engineer, a representative from structural reinforcement solutions as well as a specialist from United Structural Systems as well as the asset owner and an EOR. Together they are onsite to discuss the structure to understand the best repair plan.

The Solution: FRP++ – Strength, Protection & Longevity

SRS collaborated with United Structural Systems to develop a strategic repair plan utilizing FRP++, a reinforced structural system that integrates carbon fiber strengthening with concrete protection. This combination of materials and engineering expertise delivered a durable, high-performance solution for the garage.

Step-by-Step Parking Garage Structural Repair with FRP++

1. Condition Assessment & Engineering Support

Inspection & Analysis:

  • Structural assessments identified shear cracks, rebar corrosion, and beam spalling.

  • Load calculations determined which areas required reinforcement and shear strengthening.

spalled concrete over corroded rebar on a concrete support column
Structural Crack Injection with SRS-3000 prior to Carbon Fiber Confinement

Customized Repair Plan:

  • SRS and United Structural Systems developed a targeted reinforcement strategy to restore integrity while minimizing downtime.

Column bases exhibiting spalling, cracks and section loss were treated with epoxy injection and patched to restore integrity before applying FRP reinforcement.

Steel Protection with SRS-4100 Steel Guard:

Columns were reinforced with FRP at the the base to provide additional confinement and shear strengthening, especially in load-bearing areas.

Crack Injection with SRS-3000 Epoxy Injection Resin:

  • Injected into cracks to restore internal structural integrity.

  • Provided a seamless repair before carbon fiber application.

2. Concrete Surface Preparation & Crack Injection

 Concrete Guard Treatment (SRS-4000):

  • Strengthened existing concrete by reducing porosity and preventing future moisture infiltration.

  • Improved adhesion for FRP application, creating a stronger bond between the surface and reinforcement layers.

3. Carbon Fiber Reinforcement & Structural Strengthening

Beam & Column Reinforcement with SRS-600UNI & SRS-660BI Carbon Fiber:

  • Flexural reinforcement: SRS-600UNI was applied in multiple layers to restore and increase beam capacity.

4. Final Surface Protection & Long-Term Durability

Coating & Finish:

  • Applied a UV-resistant protective coating over FRP to enhance durability.

Minimal Disruption & Faster Completion:

  • No heavy demolition required, reducing downtime and occupant vacancy in the apartment building.

  • FRP++ system accelerated installation, allowing for a quicker return to full use.

The Results: A Stronger, More Resilient Parking Garage

Enhanced Structural Capacity – Beams, columns, and slabs now exceed their original design strength.

Corrosion Protection – Embedded steel reinforcement is safeguarded against long-term deterioration.

Extended Lifespan – FRP++ reinforcement ensures the garage remains structurally sound for decades.

Non-Invasive Application – Repairs were surface-applied, avoiding major disruptions.

"Working with SRS allowed us to implement cutting-edge carbon fiber strengthening and protective treatments that delivered an efficient and long-lasting solution."
